May 22, 2017, ANACORTES WA – On May 18, 2017 Former Mayor Dr. Eugene Alton “Bud” Strom passed away.

Dr. Strom was a dedicated public servant who grew up in Anacortes, attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry, and then returned to Anacortes where he gave tirelessly of his time to support the community.  In addition to managing his dental practice from 1951-1989, Dr. Strom served as a Planning Commission member from 1954-1957; City Councilmember from 1957-1966, Port of Anacortes Commissioner 1969-1984 and Island Hospital Board Commissioner 1986-1992.  Dr. Strom served as Mayor of Anacortes from 1961-1962.

Press Release - Completed Signal Rehabilitation Project

May 3, 2017 Anacortes, WA – WSDOT has completed a signal rehabilitation project on two of their signalized crossings on SR 20 Spur (Commercial Avenue); one at 22nd and one at 32nd.  The project changes the functioning of the signals on Commercial Avenue to include a permitted left turn phase which will be shown by a green arrow.  What this means is that at the beginning of each signal cycle on Commercial Avenue there will be a green left turn arrow permitting left turns without conflicting traffic for a certain amount of time.  Then the green arrow will turn to a flashing yellow which means that left turns are allowed but not protected from conflicting traffic.

Construction will typically be from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, although construction may be allowed during weekends if necessary. During construction, there will be temporary traffic control, road closures, and traffic detours to allow for the work. The road will be closed Monday through Friday, and open during the weekends.

Cascade Natural Gas will begin Phase 5 of the Anacortes Replacement Project resulting in the replacement of natural gas service lines in the area shown below.  This is an ongoing program to ensure our customers of safe and efficient natural gas service now and well into the future.  During the construction phase crews will install mains and services in your neighborhood.  There will be some disruption of streets, alleys and parking strips and this will be cleaned up daily.

2017 Waterline Replacement Program Update

2017 Waterline Replacement Project - February 24, 2017 - Anacortes, WA,Update - The contractor has completed the installation of the new waterlines from 12th to 17th Street on “K” Avenue and on 25th  Street from “K” to “L” Ave. The next step is for the contractor to install the asphalt patch for the new waterline trench. The paving will begin this upcoming Monday, February 27th and is expected to be completed by Thursday March 3rd.

A DNR Engine Crew will visit the fire daily at this time. Parks and Recreation staff have reopened the parking lot and trails outside the fire zone. Trails 102, 122, and a section of trail 103 will remain closed indefinitely.

Lakeside Industries will be paving the waterline trenches tomorrow, August 24th on 20th Street from “J” to “L” Avenue and on 17th Street from “J” to “K Avenue.

5th Street from Commercial to R Avenue Closed for Paving August 22 and 23, 2016

Lakeside Industries will be paving 5th Street from Commercial to R Avenue starting August, 22nd. The work is expected to be finished by August 23 early evening.  The road will be closed to allow for this work.

M Avenue will be Closed between 19th and 20th August 22-26, 2016

August 22, 2016 - Welch Brothers Construction, Inc. will be doing emergency sewer repair work on M Avenue between 19th and 20th Street. The work is expected to take most of this week if not all of it and possibly into next week. M Avenue will be closed between 19th & 20th Street to allow for the work.

Traffic Revisions at 6th & 8th Streets along Commercial Avenue

February 2, 2016  Anacortes, WA - On Friday, February 5, the Anacortes Public Works Department is going to switch the signals on Commercial Avenue at 6th and 8th Streets over to blinking red, four-way stop intersections.  The City will also install stop signs at these intersections.

12th Fan Seattle Seahawks Rally bus will make a stop at Anacortes High School’s Seahawk Stadium on Friday, June 23 at 12:30 p.m. Join Mayor Laurie Gere, Superintendent Mark Wenzel, students, staff and community members as the Seattle Seahawks raise the 12 Flag.
