Samish History at the Anacortes Museum

The Anacortes Museum is in the historic Carnegie Library Building at 1305 8^th Street in the City of Anacortes, located in the homeland of the Samish People. On exhibit are interpretive panels containing photos and information created collaboratively with Samish representatives. These are displayed near a case showing a cedar bark rain hat, adze blades and projectile points, and stone mortar and maul. The Anacortes Museum Collection is primarily stored at this location, and an online catalog can be searched for photographs, artifacts and books relating to the people of the Samish Indian Nation. The Anacortes Maritime Heritage Center is located on the waterfront of downtown Anacortes at 703 R Avenue, next to the National Historic Landmark vessel, the W.T. Preston. On exhibit are interpretive panels containing photos and information created collaboratively with Samish representatives. Among several small watercraft on display is a cedar dugout canoe hand-carved in 1930 by First Nations artisan George Gibbs of Nitinat Lake on Vancouver Island.
