First Anacortes bed race (1978)

Anacortes has had its share of quirky events over the years, many of them associated with the Marineers’ Pageant. On Oct. 28, 1978, the Anacortes High School Key Club created an entry of their own – bed races. This caption ran with a full-page spread in the Nov. 1, 1978 Anacortes American: "The first bed race in the history of Anacortes took place Saturday downtown, sponsored by the AHS Key Club. The race was part of that school's homecoming festivities. About a dozen AHS clubs competed with elaborately decorated beds in the fast-paced event. And, as you can see in the above photo, even Principal Chuck Williams joined the action."
