One month of SR 20 Sharpes Corner Area Intersection Improvements down, two to go!
- One roundabout complete:
The major work at SR 20 and Miller Gibralter roads is complete. That roundabout is fully paved, signed and operational – landscaping and permanent striping are still to come. If you haven’t driven through it yet – check it out if you have time this weekend. I’ve attached an aerial view, Tapani, took with their drone this week.
Next up
The bypass lanes!
At 7 a.m. Monday, May 7 contractor crews will start reducing lanes at SR 20 and SR 20 Spur (Sharpes Corner). Travelers should plan for lane reductions - one lane in all directions - as they get ready for their morning commutes. There will be delays. The amount of delay will depend on the time of day and behavior of other drivers. We expect the afternoon hours to have be the busiest and for the peak afternoon commute to start earlier and last longer.
How travelers can help:
Here are some options to help ease congestion through the area:- Avoid nonessential trips through this area.
- Travel outside of morning and afternoon commute hours.
- Work remotely.
- Have your child ride an Anacortes School District bus.
- Use Skagit or Island transit buses.
- Consider starting or joining a vanpool (through the links above).
- Ride a bike via the Tommy Thompson Trail or Skagit County roads.
- Carpool
No matter which mode of transportation you choose, if you need to travel through this intersection and have a time sensitive obligation on the other side, please make sure you are leaving plenty of extra time. There are no official detours during this work as lanes will always remain open – but, if you are choosing alternate routes, please make sure you are leaving extra time to follow speed limit laws on other roads.
Cyclists and Pedestrians
Anyone wanting to walk or bike to or from Whidbey Island or Anacortes will want to use the Tommy Thompson Trail and/or Skagit County or city of Anacortes roads to get around this construction area. Major work will be happening on the northern side of the project during this next stage - in the area that cyclists and pedestrians sometimes use.
