[ARCHIVED] Fraud Friday--Fraudsters Spoofing City of Anacortes Phone Number

Phone

APD has received some calls this week from residents who received spoofed calls from a City of Anacortes number, 360-293-1914. When the recipient picks up the phone, there is an automated message prompting the person to hit one to update their social security number. The good news is that the astute call recipients knew better than to provide further information.

If you receive a call like this, please take the time to research the source of the request before providing further information. Most businesses, including the City of Anacortes, will not ask you for your social security number via an automated message. If you think the request is legitimate, hang up and call the company directly. As always, be very protective of your personal identifying information, and tell your friends if you have received fraud calls so they can avoid providing their personal or financial information to someone who may not have their best interests in mind.
